Everything for the Life Cycles and Traits test: study cards, the traps to dodge, a practice quiz at three levels — Foundation, On-Level, and Challenge — and a lab where you order a butterfly’s life, label a plant, sort inherited from learned, and explain the two-plant test. Work here, or print it and use a pencil — both count.
One dog. Its fur color came from its parents — it was there the day it was born.
Some traits come from parents, some from practice, and some from both. Ask which one you are looking at before you call it inherited — size and health are almost always both.
Two things people get wrong
⚠️People often think…
A butterfly goes egg, chrysalis, caterpillar, butterfly.
The caterpillar comes FIRST. Egg → caterpillar → chrysalis → butterfly. The caterpillar is the one that eats and grows; the chrysalis is where the rebuilding happens.
Eat first, then rebuild. Caterpillar before chrysalis.
⚠️People often think…
Animals grow helpful traits because they need them.
No animal chooses its traits. The ones that happen to have a helpful one survive longer and have more young — so the next generation has more of them. Wanting has nothing to do with it.
Having it beats wanting it.
Born, grow, adult, young, again

Two seeds from the same packet grow into very different plants. Why?
Ask what is the same: the seeds came from the same packet, so the plan is the same.
So the difference cannot be the seed.
Ask what was different: light, water, soil, space.
The environment did it. Same plan, different conditions. ✓

Not the root, not the stem, not the flower. The one you would press in a book.
Where this goes
Where this lives
Growing something in a pot, training a pet, noticing which traits in your family showed up in everybody and which did not.
What this feeds
Next unit is weather and climate — the place part of ‘parents, practice, place’.
Name one thing about you that came from practice, not from your parents.
One card at a time — tap “Show me” to check yourself, then Next. Start at Foundation; when those feel easy, climb.
Helpful Hints
🪜 From a seed to the next seed — the ladder
Born or hatched → grow → adult → have young → the young start again. Some animals change shape on the way (metamorphosis); plants go seed → sprout → plant → flower → seed.
Born, grow, adult, young, again.
🤝 The whole topic in one idea
Every living thing runs the same circle, and every trait it has comes from one of three places — its parents, its practice, or its surroundings. The traits that help it survive are the ones its young inherit.
Parents, practice, place.
⚠️ Traps the test loves
Egg → caterpillar → chrysalis → butterfly. The caterpillar comes BEFORE the chrysalis.
A trick a dog does is learned. Its fur color is inherited. Its size can be both — plan from parents, food from the environment.
Same seeds, different plants? The environment did it — not the seeds.
Animals don’t CHOOSE helpful traits. The ones that have them survive and have more young.
The flower makes the seeds — not the leaf, not the root.

🎯 How the test will ask
A circle of pictures with one blank — “what stage is missing?” (follow the arrows).
A list of traits — “inherited or learned?” (born with it, or practiced it?).
Two plants from one packet, one taller — “why?” (sun, water, soil — the environment).
Animals of two colors and a hunter — “which color wins over time?” (the one that hides).
✅ Before the test, can you…
Put a butterfly’s four stages in order?
Name the five parts of a plant and each one’s job?
Sort ten traits into inherited and learned?
Explain the two-plant test in one sentence?
Say why a helpful trait becomes common?

Lab
Work like a scientist: label the diagrams, turn the table into a graph, then write a claim with evidence and reasoning. Every lab checks itself on the spot, and hints are free.

Your practice record — saved on this device
This is your record of the module on screen — it stays here and goes nowhere. Independent means you got it right on the first tap; supported means you got it after the explain-and-retry, or marked ‘I had it’ on a revealed answer. Both count, and neither is a grade. If your teacher asks, copy the row or show them this screen.

The answer key is for a teacher: it prints only from here, for the unit on screen. Print the study packet prints the study pages and a blank quiz — never the answers.
