Everything for the Reproduction and Growth test: study cards, the traps to dodge, and a practice quiz at three levels — Foundation, On-Level, and Challenge. Work here, or print it and use a pencil — both count.
One parent. The offspring are copies — same everything.
One parent and identical offspring is asexual reproduction. Two parents and a new mix every time is sexual reproduction. That mix is the whole point: variety is what survives a change.
Four things people get wrong
⚠️People often think…
Offspring are basically copies of their parents.
Only in asexual reproduction. With two parents, every offspring gets a different mix — which is why siblings with the same parents are not the same person.
Two parents, new mix, every single time.
⚠️People often think…
Pollination and fertilization are the same event.
Pollination is the delivery — pollen arrives. Fertilization is when the two cells actually join. Delivery is not the handshake, and plenty of pollen never gets there.
Delivered is not the same as joined.
⚠️People often think…
A peacock's tail is just decoration.
That tail is heavy and easy for a predator to spot. It exists because it wins mates, and winning mates is how the trait gets passed on at all.
Costly features are paid for by mating.
⚠️People often think…
How big something grows is decided entirely by its genes.
Genes set the range; food, water, light and temperature decide where inside that range it lands. Two seeds from the same packet grow to different heights.
Genes set the ceiling. Conditions set the height.
Count the parents first
1Watch one
A strawberry plant sends out a runner and a new plant grows from it. Same DNA or different?
Count the parents: one.
Nothing got mixed with anything.
One parent means asexual.
Same DNA — the new plant is a copy.
2Do one with me
Two pea plants are crossed. The seeds grow into plants that match neither parent. Why?
Number of parents:
Each seed gets a
That kind of reproduction is
💬One sentence, then you move on
Why does getting a new mix every time help a species survive?
3Try one
A bee drops pollen onto a flower. Has fertilization happened yet? Write yes or no.
I want a hint first
Pollen arriving is the delivery. Fertilization is the two cells joining.
💬Last one — then you're done here
What is the difference between pollination and fertilization?
Where this goes
Where this lives
Every seed packet, every dog breed, and every time somebody says a kid has their mother's eyes.
What this feeds
Next unit is ecosystems, where those offspring have to find enough food to live on.
Name one trait you have that came from a parent, and one thing about you that conditions decided.
One card at a time — tap “Show me” to check yourself, then Next. Start at Foundation; when those feel easy, climb.
Helpful Hints
👯 The big split: asexual vs. sexual
Asexual: ONE parent → identical copies. Fast, no partner needed. Sexual: TWO parents → offspring get a MIX of traits. Slower, but variety helps survival when conditions change.
One parent = copies. Two parents = combos.
🌸 Flower parts in one line
Stamen = male part, makes pollen. Pistil = female part, holds eggs. Pollination moves pollen to the pistil; fertilization is sperm meeting egg — that’s when a seed begins.
StaMEN = male. Pollination is the delivery; fertilization is the handshake.
⚠️ Traps the test loves
Sexual reproduction does NOT make identical offspring — each gets a different mix.
Pollination ≠ fertilization. Delivery isn’t the handshake.
Fancy features aren’t decoration — a peacock’s tail exists because it wins mates.
Growth isn’t only genes — environment (food, water, light, temperature) changes how big organisms grow.
🐣 Behaviors that boost reproduction
Courtship displays: dances, songs, bright colors — advertising for a mate.
Nest building and territory defense: a safe place raises survival.
Parental care: feeding and guarding young — fewer babies, better odds each.
🎯 How the test will ask
MS-LS1-4 wants an ARGUMENT: claim + evidence that a structure or behavior INCREASES reproduction odds.
MS-LS1-5 gives you DATA (plant height vs. light) — read the pattern, then say “environment influenced growth.”
Watch for “genetic or environmental?” — genes set the potential, environment decides how much happens.
✅ Before the test, can you…
Give two differences between asexual and sexual reproduction?
Name one advantage of EACH type?
Define pollination vs. fertilization?
Give two animal behaviors that raise reproduction success?
List three environmental factors that affect growth?

Workshop
Work like a field biologist: name the parts of a flower, sort reproduction by how many parents it takes, walk a seed from pollen to sprout, then argue the trade every species makes between many offspring and few.

Your practice record — saved on this device
This is your record of the module on screen — it stays here and goes nowhere. Independent means you got it right on the first tap; supported means you got it after the explain-and-retry, or marked ‘I had it’ on a revealed answer. Both count, and neither is a grade. If your teacher asks, copy the row or show them this screen.

The answer key is for a teacher: it prints only from here, for the unit on screen. Print the study packet prints the study pages and a blank quiz — never the answers.
