Last room you found the main idea of a paragraph that said it out loud. A story almost never says its idea out loud. So you build it — out of a character who wants something, a problem in the way, and what changes by the end. That built idea is the theme, and it is a sentence about people in general, not about this one character. Five tabs — cards for the elements and the theme, hints with the theme-building steps, a quiz that makes you tell a theme from a summary, and a workshop where you sort story parts, put a plot in order, label a story arc and say why a theme is not a one-word moral.
A girl wants to swim with her cousins. Deep water frightens her. Every day she walks to the end of the dock and turns around.
A story shows you a character who wants something, a problem in the way, and what is different by the end. It almost never states what it means. The theme is the sentence you build out of that change — a full sentence, about people in general, with no character name in it, and backed by two things that actually happened.
Two things people get wrong
⚠️People often think…
The theme is “courage.” That is what the story is about.
That is the topic, not the theme — and one word cannot be true or false, so there is nothing in it to check. Finish the sentence: what does the story SAY about courage? “Courage is not the absence of fear but acting while afraid.” Now it is a claim, and the ending holds it up.
Same test as bears: could it be wrong? One word never can.
⚠️People often think…
The theme is that Maya was afraid to swim and then she swam.
That is a summary — it says what happened to one person on one afternoon, so there is nothing in it for anyone else. A theme reaches past the story. Take the name out and see whether the sentence still says something; if it does not, you wrote a summary.
No names in a theme. That is the fastest check there is.
Want, problem, change, claim
1Watch one
Build a theme for a story where a boy lies about breaking a window and then owns up.
What did he want, and what got in the way? He wanted not to be in trouble; the truth was in the way.
What is different at the end — in him, not just in the situation? He tells the truth even though it costs him.
Name what the change is about in a word or two: honesty. That is the topic, not the theme.
Turn it into a sentence about people, with no name: “Telling the truth costs something, and hiding it costs more.”

A theme must be a whole ____. Write one word.
I want a hint first
It is the same answer as a main idea. One word is never enough.
Where this goes
Where this lives
This is what people are doing when they argue about a film on the way home. Not what happened — everyone saw that. What it was saying, and whether the film earned it.
What this feeds
Next room: writers arrange material on purpose so you build the idea they wanted. Here is how the arranging works.
Say the theme of something you watched this week in one sentence, with no names.

Helpful Hints
⚡ The one idea
A story never tells you its theme. It shows you a person who wants something, puts a problem in the way, and lets you watch what changes. The theme is the sentence you write afterwards about what that change means for people in general — not about this character.
🧩 The four elements
Character — who the story happens to, and what they want.
Setting — where and when it happens.
Problem — what stands between the character and what they want.
Resolution — how the problem ends, and what is different afterwards.
🪜 Building a theme, in four steps
1 · What did the character want, and what got in the way?
2 · What is different at the end — in the character, not just in the situation?
3 · Say what that change is about in one or two words: courage, honesty, belonging.
4 · Turn it into a sentence about people, with no character name in it.

Summary
what happened, in order

Moral
an order to the reader
Always be brave.
Theme
a sentence about people in general
Courage is not the absence of fear but acting while afraid.
🎯 How you will be asked
“What is the theme of this story?”
“What is the problem, and how is it resolved?”
“How does the character change from beginning to end?”
“Which detail best supports the theme?”
“How does the setting affect the problem?”
✅ Before the test, can you…
Name the four elements of any story you have read?
Say a theme as a full sentence with no character name in it?
Tell a theme from a summary when both are offered?
Point at the moment the character changed?
Back a theme with two things that actually happened?

Workshop
Work like a reader who can prove a theme: sort twelve statements about one story, put its plot in order, label the story arc, then say why “courage” is not a theme.

This is your record of the module on screen — it stays here and goes nowhere. Independent means you got it right on the first tap; supported means you got it after the explain-and-retry, or marked ‘I had it’ on a revealed answer. Both count, and neither is a grade. If your teacher asks, copy the row or show them this screen.
