The Interior — English

Diction and Syntax

Back inside the sentence, at the finest grain there is: the exact words and the exact order. Two instruments do most of the work here and both do the same thing — they delete the person responsible. The passive drops the actor: mistakes were made. Nominalization turns a verb into a noun so there is nobody left to have done it: there was a reduction in staffing. Nobody lied, and nobody can be asked. Alongside that sits syntax proper — where a sentence puts its point, and what the order does to a reader who meets the end last. Five tabs — cards for concreteness, agency, nominalization and sentence shape, hints with the who-did-it test, a quiz built on sentences with the actor removed, and a workshop where you restore missing agents and argue what an order was doing.

Ask every sentence: who did it?

One event, written two ways. The first names the person who did it, so you could ask him why. The second moves him to the end, and he is still findable.

What people get wrong

People often think…

The passive voice is bad writing, so I will say the writer should avoid it.

People often think…

It says there was a reduction, so a reduction happened. Nothing is being hidden.

People often think…

The report used abstract language, so it was being vague.

Find the act, restore the actor

Watch one

Apply the test to: “Following a review, the consultation was concluded ahead of schedule.”

  1. Find the act: somebody ended a consultation before it was due to end.
  2. Ask who did it. The sentence does not say — was concluded is an agentless passive, and a review is a nominalization with no actor either.
  3. Restore it: “The committee ended the consultation three weeks early.” Notice you had to supply the committee, and the three weeks.
  4. What was gained: ahead of schedule reads as efficiency rather than as a choice, and there is nobody to ask why early. Nothing untrue was written.

Why is removing the actor more effective than writing something false?

Last one — then you're done here

Every rung of the abstraction ladder is true. Why does that make it so hard to object to?

This is your record of the module on screen — it stays here and goes nowhere. Independent means you got it right on the first tap; supported means you got it after the explain-and-retry, or marked ‘I had it’ on a revealed answer. Both count, and neither is a grade. If your teacher asks, copy the row or show them this screen.

The answer key is for a teacher: it prints only from here, for the unit on screen. Print the study packet prints the study pages and a blank quiz — never the answers.
