Child Development and Care

How children grow from birth to five — in the body, in thinking, in words, and in feelings and friendships — and how an adult cares for them, guides them and keeps them safe. Study cards, hints, a quiz and a workshop where you order the milestones, sort guidance from punishment, read a morning at a childcare center and decide what to do when a tower falls.

A milestone is a range, not a date

One line, one tick, one child standing exactly on it. That is how a milestone gets pictured.

Four things people get wrong

People often think…

A child who is not walking at twelve months is behind.

People often think…

A two-year-old screaming on the floor is misbehaving.

People often think…

Two-year-olds who play side by side and never share are being selfish.

People often think…

If a child is slower than her cousin, someone should tell the family what is wrong.

One tower, one tantrum, four domains

Watch one

Tomás is two. His block tower falls and he drops to the floor screaming. What is happening, and what do you do?

  1. He is two. He wanted it tall.
  2. His hands cannot stack that high yet.
  3. He has too few words to say so.
  4. The gap between wanting and doing comes out loud.
  5. Stay near, stay calm, name the feeling. Talk about it after, not during.
One sentence, then you move on

Why is a milestone age a range of months instead of a date?

Last one — then you are done here

Why does naming a feeling help a three-year-old more than telling her to calm down?

Your practice record — saved on this device

This is your record of the module on screen — it stays here and goes nowhere. Independent means you got it right on the first tap; supported means you got it after the explain-and-retry, or marked ‘I had it’ on a revealed answer. Both count, and neither is a grade. If your teacher asks, copy the row or show them this screen.

The answer key is for a teacher: it prints only from here, for the unit on screen. Print the study packet prints the study pages and a blank quiz — never the answers.
