Everything you need to sew by hand: the kit, the thread, the knot, seven stitches, a button that stays on, a hem that does not show, and a split seam made whole again. Study Cards teach it, Helpful Hints sort it out, the Practice Quiz checks it, and the Workshop puts a needle in your hand.
The path the thread takes decides whether the seam holds
Two pieces joined by one line of stitching: over, under, over. Pull one piece and the seam opens between the dashes.
Those two paths have names. The first is the running stitch — quick, and weak. The second is the backstitch — the strong one, because each stitch reaches back into the last and no gap is ever left unfilled.
Four things people get wrong
⚠️People often think…
A longer thread means fewer stops, so the job goes faster.
Past about 18 in (45 cm) a thread tangles, knots on itself and wears thin from being dragged through the cloth so many times. You lose more time untangling than you saved.
About 18 in — fingertips to elbow.
⚠️People often think…
A running stitch will hold a split seam if you make the stitches small enough.
The size is not the problem; the path is. A running stitch leaves the thread free between stitches, so pull one end and the whole row slides out. A seam that carries weight gets a backstitch.
Weight on the seam means backstitch.
⚠️People often think…
A button should be pulled down tight against the cloth so it does not wobble.
On thick cloth a tight button leaves no room for the layer the buttonhole sits in, and the buttonhole will not close. Sew over a pin or a toothpick, pull it out, and wind the loose thread underneath into a short stem — a shank.
Thick cloth needs a shank.
⚠️People often think…
The knot can go on whichever side you started sewing from.
Knots and loose ends belong on the wrong side — the back of the fabric. Start from the wrong side, end off there with two small stitches in the same place, and snip close.
If you can see the knot, you worked from the wrong direction.
Pick the stitch the job asks for
1Watch one
The seam on a backpack strap has split open. Which stitch mends it?
A loaded strap pulls on every stitch.
A running stitch leaves the thread free between stitches.
Each backstitch locks the one before it.
Backstitch it, starting 1/2 in inside the stitching that is still good.
2Do one with me
Three things decide almost every hand-sewing job. Fill them in.
The strongest stitch you can make by hand is
The stitch that holds something in place for now, then comes out, is
Cut about this much thread at a time
💬One sentence, then you move on
Why can a running stitch slide out when a backstitch cannot?
3Try one
You are sewing a four-hole button onto a thick coat. Name the thing you lay across the top of the button while you stitch, so the button has room to sit on top.
I want a hint first
What happens if the button is sewn flat against a thick coat? The buttonhole carries a layer of cloth, and that layer needs somewhere to sit.
💬Last one — then you’re done here
In one sentence, why does the path the thread takes decide whether a seam holds?
Where this goes
Where this lives
A button off a work shirt an hour before a shift. A needle, a double thread, a pin laid across the top for the shank, and the shirt goes back on.
What this feeds
Next unit is the sewing machine — the same locking idea, made hundreds of times a minute.
Name one thing you own that is held together by stitches, and say which stitch you would use to fix it.
One card at a time — tap “Show me” to check yourself, then Next. Start at Foundation; when those feel easy, climb.
Helpful Hints
🧭 The unit in one line
Open the kit → pick the needle → cut about 18 in of thread → knot it → put right sides together → choose the stitch the job needs → sew → end off on the wrong side → snip → count the needles and pins back in.
Kit, knot, stitch, end off.
🔑 The one idea
There is no best stitch. There is a stitch for each job. Ask one question first — does this have to come out later, does it have to hold hard, or does it have to disappear? — and the stitch chooses itself.
⚠️ Traps to avoid
Long thread is not faster. Past about 18 in (45 cm) it tangles, knots and wears thin from being pulled through the fabric so many times.
Never cut paper with fabric shears. One cut through paper dulls the blades, and a dull blade chews fabric instead of cutting it.
A running stitch is not a repair. Pull one end and the whole row slides out. Seams that carry weight get a backstitch.
Do not sew a button flat against thick cloth. With no shank — the little stem of thread under it — the button pulls tight and the buttonhole will not close.
Knots and loose ends belong on the wrong side, the back of the fabric. If you can see your knot from outside, you sewed from the wrong direction.
Never hold pins or needles in your mouth, and never leave one loose on a chair or the floor. Count them out and count the same number back in.

🎯 How you will be asked
“Here is a job. Name the stitch, and say why that one.”
“Put the steps of sewing on a four-hole button in order.”
“Point to the eye, the shaft and the point of the needle.”
“What is the seam allowance on most patterns, and where is it measured from?”
“Say the needle and pin safety rules the way you would to a new student.”
✅ Before the test, can you…
Name nine tools in a hand-sewing kit and what each one does?
Thread a needle, cut the right length, and tie a knot that holds?
Work a running, basting, back, whip, overcast, slip and blanket stitch?
Sew on a four-hole button with a shank, start to finish, without being told the steps?
Mend a split seam so it is as strong as the seam beside it?
Tell right side from wrong side, and end off where the knot will not show?
📚 Go to the sources
These open another website and need the internet. Old sewing manuals are free because their copyright has run out — the stitches in them are the same ones you are learning. Museum collections let you look closely at stitches people made by hand long before machines.
Look back at anything you missed — the hint that appeared is exactly what to reread tonight.
How sure did you feel?
Workshop
Work like a sewer: name the parts of a needle and a seam, put the steps of a button in order, match each job to its stitch, then argue for the stitch that will hold a backpack strap.

This is your record of the module on screen — it stays here and goes nowhere. Independent means you got it right on the first tap; supported means you got it after the explain-and-retry, or marked ‘I had it’ on a revealed answer. Both count, and neither is a grade. If your teacher asks, copy the row or show them this screen.
