The Interior — Mathematics

Adding and subtracting within 20

Adding puts parts together; subtracting starts with the whole and finds the part that is missing. Counting on and counting back, doubles and doubles plus one, the pairs that make ten, and making a ten to add 8 + 5. Fact families with their four facts, a missing number in any place, and the equals sign as ‘the same as’. Story problems that put together, take from and compare. Study cards, hints, a practice quiz at three levels, and four workshop activities that check themselves.

One picture, read two ways

Two parts sitting apart: seven here, three there.

Two things people get wrong

People often think…

7 + 2 is 8, because you count “7, 8.”

People often think…

The word “more” always means add.

Find the parts, find the whole

Watch one

7 + 2.

  1. Start at 7. Do not count it.
  2. Count one more: 8.
  3. Count one more: 9.
  4. 9. Two steps, not two numbers said.
One sentence, then you move on

Why don't you count the first number when you add?

Where this goes

Where this lives

Knowing how much more you need, splitting a snack, figuring out how many are missing.

What this feeds

Next unit is tens and ones — what happens once the numbers get past twenty.

Write one pair of parts that make 10.

Your practice record — saved on this device

This is your record of the module on screen — it stays here and goes nowhere. Independent means you got it right on the first tap; supported means you got it after the explain-and-retry, or marked ‘I had it’ on a revealed answer. Both count, and neither is a grade. If your teacher asks, copy the row or show them this screen.

The answer key is for a teacher: it prints only from here, for the unit on screen. Print the study packet prints the study pages and a blank quiz — never the answers.
