The Interior — Mathematics

Length, Time and Money

Measuring with a ruler, starting at zero, in inches and centimeters, and choosing the unit that fits. Comparing lengths and showing them on a graph. Telling time to the hour, the half hour and five minutes, and knowing a.m. from p.m. Pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters and dollars, counting a handful of coins biggest first, and small money problems. Study cards, hints, a practice quiz at three levels, and four workshop activities that check themselves.

Everything starts at zero

Lined up at the 1, this pencil looks five inches long. It is not five inches long.

Two things people get wrong

People often think…

The minute hand pointing at the 4 means four minutes.

People often think…

The nickel is bigger than the dime, so it is worth more.

Unit, zero, count, write

Watch one

How long is the pencil?

  1. Line the end up with zero.
  2. Count the spaces, not the marks.
  3. One, two, three, four.
  4. 4 inches. Write the unit too.
One sentence, then you move on

Why does a ruler have to start at zero and not at one?

Where this goes

Where this lives

Knowing if you can afford it, catching the bus, cutting a board to the right length.

What this feeds

Next unit is shapes and equal shares — measuring what a shape IS, not how long it is.

Name one thing you measured or paid for today.

Your practice record — saved on this device

This is your record of the module on screen — it stays here and goes nowhere. Independent means you got it right on the first tap; supported means you got it after the explain-and-retry, or marked ‘I had it’ on a revealed answer. Both count, and neither is a grade. If your teacher asks, copy the row or show them this screen.

The answer key is for a teacher: it prints only from here, for the unit on screen. Print the study packet prints the study pages and a blank quiz — never the answers.
