A diagnosis, then a cure

First truth: there is suffering — dissatisfaction, impermanence, things not staying. That is the symptom.

Worth knowing cold

Four things that get confused

Each of these appears in almost every first summary, and each one is fixable in a sentence.

  1. Buddha A TITLE, meaning “awakened one”, not a personal name. The historical figure is Siddhartha Gautama. He is honored, not worshipped as a creator god.
  2. Budai The fat laughing figure in restaurants is Budai, a Chinese folk monk — a different person entirely from Siddhartha Gautama.
  3. Anatta vs atman Hindu atman is an eternal self. Buddhist anatta is NO permanent self. The two traditions disagree here on purpose; do not blend them.
  4. The Eightfold Path Eight spokes of one wheel, practiced TOGETHER — not eight steps done in order. Nobody finishes step three and moves on.

Palace, sights, middle, tree, wheel

Why is the middle way called a middle?

  1. Start with the first extreme: a life of palace luxury, which did not end the dissatisfaction.
  2. Then the second: severe asceticism, starving the body, which nearly killed him and also did not work.
  3. Both extremes keep attention fixed on the body — one indulging it, one fighting it.
  4. So the path runs between them. “Middle” is a description of a route, not a compromise. ✓

Why are the Four Noble Truths described as a diagnosis?

Last one — then you're done here

Why do anatta and atman have to be kept separate?

This is your record of the module on screen — it stays here and goes nowhere. Independent means you got it right on the first tap; supported means you got it after the explain-and-retry, or marked ‘I had it’ on a revealed answer. Both count, and neither is a grade. If your teacher asks, copy the row or show them this screen.

The answer key is for a teacher: it prints only from here, for the unit on screen. Print the study packet prints the study pages and a blank quiz — never the answers.
