The Interior — Social Studies

Needs, Wants and Work

Needs, wants and work for the youngest economists: study cards a grown-up can read aloud, the tricky ones, a practice quiz at three levels — Foundation, On-Level, and Challenge — and a lab where you sort needs from wants, sort the jobs that make goods from the ones that give services, put earn, save and spend in order, and graph what a class wants to be. Work here, or print it and use a crayon — both count.

Somebody worked for that

A pizza on the table. It just showed up, as far as you can tell.

Two things people get wrong

People often think…

If you want something badly enough, it is a need.

People often think…

A job is only a job if you get paid.

Worth knowing cold

Four words to keep straight

Each one has a question you can ask yourself to check.

  1. Need What you must have to live and be safe: food, water, a place to sleep, clothes for the weather. Ask: would I be okay without it?
  2. Want Everything after that. Wanting something a LOT does not turn it into a need — it just makes the choosing harder.
  3. Good / service A good is a thing you can hold. A service is work someone does for you. Ask: could I put it in a bag?
  4. Save / spend Saving means the money is still YOURS, just not spent yet. Spending trades it for something. Both are choices.

Need or want, good or service, earn, save

Watch one

Is a haircut a good or a service?

  1. Ask the test question: could you put it in a bag and carry it home?
  2. No — there is no object to carry. The hair is gone.
  3. Somebody did WORK for you instead.
  4. So it is a service. The scissors are a good; the haircut is a service. ✓
One sentence, then you move on

Why is wanting something a lot not enough to make it a need?

Where this goes

Where this lives

Deciding what to do with a dollar, noticing who did the work behind something you use, understanding why saving takes patience.

Your practice record — saved on this device

This is your record of the module on screen — it stays here and goes nowhere. Independent means you got it right on the first tap; supported means you got it after the explain-and-retry, or marked ‘I had it’ on a revealed answer. Both count, and neither is a grade. If your teacher asks, copy the row or show them this screen.

The answer key is for a teacher: it prints only from here, for the unit on screen. Print the study packet prints the study pages and a blank quiz — never the answers.
