In Spanish a vowel’s name IS its sound, and the sound never changes. Five letters, five sounds, no exceptions — which means you can say a Spanish word the first time you see it. Twenty-four cards, a quiz in three tiers and four workshop activities start the whole sequence here.
This is the letter a in English. In cat it says one thing. In cake it says another. In ball, another again. In about it almost disappears. One letter, four jobs.
In Spanish, a vowel’s NAME is its SOUND. When you sing the vowels — a, e, i, o, u — you are already saying the five sounds you need to read any Spanish word there is. English asks you to learn the name, and then learn the sounds, and then learn which one to use. Spanish asks you once.
Two things people get wrong
⚠️People often think…
The Spanish e sounds like the English letter e — ee, as in he.
The Spanish e says EH, the sound in bed and red. So mesa is MEH-sah, not MEE-sah, and leche is LEH-cheh. The ee sound has an owner already, and it is the letter i: sí is SEE, mi is MEE. Give ee to the i and the e stops causing trouble.
e says eh. The ee sound belongs to the i.
⚠️People often think…
The h in hola makes a sound, the way it does in hat.
The Spanish h never makes a sound. Not sometimes — never. Hola is OH-lah. Hospital is oss-pee-TAL. Hermano is er-MAH-no. The letter is written down and then simply skipped, which is the only letter in Spanish that does that.
The h is quiet. Every single time.
Read a word nobody has taught you

🧭 The unit in one line
Five vowels → one sound each, forever → a ah, e eh, i ee, o oh, u oo → the h is silent and ll says y → so you can say a word before you know it.

🔑 The one idea
A Spanish vowel has one job and keeps it. The letter a says ah in every word there has ever been — not usually, not mostly, always. That is why you can read a Spanish word out loud the first time you see it, even when you have no idea what it means. Saying and understanding are two different jobs, and Spanish hands you the first one on the first day.
⚠️ Traps to avoid
The e says eh, as in bed — never ee. Mesa is MEH-sah, not MEE-sah.
The h is silent every single time. Hola is OH-lah, hermano is er-MAH-no.
Two l letters together say y, not l: silla is SEE-yah, me llamo is meh-YAH-moh.
Ñ is a letter of its own, not a decorated n. Año and ano are two different words.
There is no silent e on the end. Grande has two beats you can hear: GRAHN-deh.
One r taps, two r letters roll. Pero means but; perro means dog.
A long word is not a hard word. Nothing changes partway through, so you just keep going.
