For the teacher
What the course covers
The course studies the Bible’s unseen world from the primary documents: God’s heavenly family, Eden, Noah and Babel told gently for the youngest readers; old books and how we know them, the divine council, the three rebellions, angels and the Angel of the LORD in 3–5; 1 Enoch and the Watchers, the giant clans, Deuteronomy 32 and the Dead Sea Scrolls, the satan and demons in 6–8; the mission Michael Heiser called “reversing Hermon”, Enoch in the New Testament and angels up close in 9–10; the documents and the scholars side by side, the end of the story, and how the Watchers story was received from the church fathers and the rabbis to today in 11–12. Heiser leads a conversation that includes Nickelsburg, VanderKam, Stuckenbruck, Reed and others. Every reading is attributed and described, never taught as true or false; passages come from public-domain translations; every lesson ends with three checks answerable from its reading.
Sources
Every lesson starts from an ancient text: the Bible, 1 Enoch, Jubilees, the Dead Sea Scrolls and others, quoted from public-domain translations or retold. Scholars’ ideas, Michael Heiser’s and others’, are told in our own words and named as theirs. Everything else is original text written for this course.
